Jan Stephenson was born on 22 December 1951 in Sydney, Australia. She was born to Frank Stephenson as Jan Lynne Stephenson. While young, Stephenson won five sequential New South Wales Schoolgirl Championships in Australia, starting in 1964, with three straight wins in the New South Wales Junior Championship.
She handed over to the professional in 1973 and won the Australian Open that year. Stephenson entered the LPGA Tour in 1974 and was named Rookie of the Year.
