Stephenson joined Lincoln High School and won all four years of high school basketball championships in the town. He is the all-time leading scorer in high school basketball in New York State. He later registered at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in 2005 and performed for the team of the colleges.
He was the leading scorer among Big East freshmen and was named Big East Rookie of the Year. On April 7, 2010, Stephenson announced that he would reject his final three seasons of college eligibility and enter the 2010 NBA draft.
